First-team squad update

There has been one exit and one new addition to the first-team squad this week.

Firstly, we welcome Samir Ouahid Buyaala into the squad after his international clearance came through. Samir plays in midfield and has been playing over in Germany most recently.

Going the other way is defender Tom Jelley - he has left to join Tooting and Mitcham United and takes with him all our best wishes.

Next up for the first-team is a trip to Whyteleafe on Saturday 4th November.

Match summary - Greenwich Borough (h)

We lost by three goals to visiting Greenwich Borough on Monday night, writes James Barrett-Sterling.

After getting back to winning ways last Saturday with a 4-2 win over Ashford United, we unfortunately fell behind in a 14th minute when a low free kick into our box was turned onto a post and Charlie McDonald - the midfielder whom bagged a hat-trick in the corresponding fixture last season - tucked in the rebound.

We had a goal disallowed in first-half added time - George Kamurasi spilt a 20-yard Jordan Cheadle free kick and Bobby Price pounced, only for his close range effort to be ruled offside.

Another free kick just before the hour led to Borough's second - the flight of the ball was tracked by the completely unmarked Mark Phillips and the defender side-footed it past the exposed Billy Bishop.

We had a fair claim for a penalty on 71 minutes as Miller got Cheadle away in some space down the left and his first-time cross seemed to be controlled by the arm of Tom Carlse, but the referee ignored the calls from both on and off the pitch,

A flying run by Ricky Korboa on 82 minutes saw him streak down the left before, following a small bit of luck on a block tackle, Josh Phillips and Mickel Miller combined to get Korboa in on goal. As Kamurasi rushed out, he unselfishly squared for Miller to roll the ball into an empty net but the linesman flagged for offside on the earlier through ball.

And our misery was compounded at the end as Jack Barham pounced on a hesitant Michael Aziaya, whom was last man, before rounding Bishop and slotting home Borough's third from a tight angle.

Match report - Ashford United (h)

We completed a first league double as we got back to winning ways against Ashford United, writes James Barrett-Sterling.

Team news
Two changes from Tuesday's game at East Grinstead as Jordan Cheadle and Mickel Miller replaced Sean O'Toole and Ricky Korboa.

Kick-off
We made a lightening start and Raheem Sterling-Parker drew a foul in their box on three minutes, but Aaron Lee-Wharton guessed right to claw away Cheadle's placed spot-kick.

Our heads didn't drop however and we went on to boss the first-half almost entirely.

A long Billy Bishop clearance was left by Sterling-Parker, whom was in an offside position, and it bounced beyond a static defence for Miller to run onto. He steadied himself but could only hit Lee-Wharton with his angled effort.

Next to be denied by the visiting keeper was Tommy Bradford whom lined one up from 18 yards only to see his shot parried - Miller reacted to the loose ball but Lee-Wharton did well to throw himself in the way of the second attempt.

Bobby Price also had two efforts from distance blocked, while Miller saw a firm low cross across United's six yard box fizz past a clutch of players.

Our backline were dealing with United's long balls out of defence comfortably, apart from one that saw Stuart Zanone isolate Tom Jelley before shooting weakly past Bishop's left-hand post, but we were struggling to turn our dominance into goals.

Bradford neatly picked out the run of Sterling-Parker on 19 minutes but, on the stretch, our number nine fired into the side-netting.

And he tried to work his own opening a few minutes later on the far side, but his curled shot didn't have enough to bend back inside the far post.

Our visitors began to get frustrated - their only real threat on our goal came when Bishop had to parry a shot away following an uncleared corner - and the flow of the game began to stutter as they gave away foul after foul.

George Humber was fortunate not to see red during that period - he appeared to aim a headbutt at Bradford after the two squared up off the ball, but the referee simply booked the pair and told them to get on with the game.

Bradford almost capitalised on some hesitancy in the United defence on 39 minutes as he nipped in front of Pat Kingwell inside their box, but his resultant chip didn't dip enough to get under the crossbar.

But we finally broke the deadlock in added time as Sterling-Parker was felled by Kingwell and he placed the resultant penalty past Lee-Wharton's dive.

HALF-TIME: 1 - 0

Bradford had his head in his hands just five minutes into the second-half - a firm effort from just inside their area was tipped away by Lee-Wharton at full stretch.

We continued to probe and win many more free kicks, with captain Paris Hamilton-Downes exasperated at the lack of punishment coming from the referee, until we doubled our lead just after the hour.

Ola Sogbanmu flicked on Tom Jelley's forward ball for Miller to eventually get Sterling-Parker in on goal. But, unselfishly, he squared the ball back to his teammate whom plundered his 11th of the season in off the post.

The relief at finally having a two-goal cushion was palpable and we almost made it three as Price's quick free kick saw Bradford eventually flash a driven ball just wide of United's far post.

Bradford was at it again on 70 minutes - he cut in from the near side and made some space in the box, but his curled effort was tipped round the far post by the fingers of Lee-Wharton.

Then, suddenly, the complexion of the game threatened to change as a simple through ball by Ben Davisson caught our defence square and Max Watters calmly slotted past the exposed Bishop.

This wasn't a game we could afford to throw away but thankfully we got back onto the front foot again - sub Korboa persisted with a run down the right before pulling the ball back to the unmarked Sogbanmu, but he smashed a shot over the bar.

Bradford was played in on goal on 83 minutes and it seemed odds-on that a left-footed effort would beat Lee-Wharton but, instead, our man cut back onto his right and his shot was deflected away by a recovering defender.

Just when it looked like it wouldn't be our number ten's day, Sogbanmu played Bradford into an exact same position three minutes later and this time he trusted his weaker foot to drill a low shot beyond Lee-Wharton for his third of the season.

And we weren't done - a neat passing move involving five players ended with Price playing Korboa in and he executed a similar finish to Bradford for his first goal since returning from long-term injury.

The late scoring unbelievably wasn't done however as Bishop did well to palm a free kick onto our crossbar but Matthew Day reacted quickest to nod in a consolation for our visitors.

We almost had a fifth deep in stoppage time as Korboa threaded a neat pass for fellow sub Josh Phillips to bustle onto between two defenders, but Lee-Wharton yet again thwarted us by staying big and blocking away the shot.

Photos from the game will be available soon.

First-team squad update

There have been some comings and goings over the past two weeks.

Most of you would've of course seen the return of Sean O'Toole by now - the popular winger rejoined the squad earlier this month and made his first full start on Tuesday night against East Grinstead Town.

Defender Michael Aziaya made his full debut in the sae game after signing on Tuesday morning - he arrived from Cray Valley PM having also played for Hastings United and Linkshopping in Sweden.

Departing the squad are defenders Ricardo Panton and Atone Douglas - we'd like to thank them for their efforts on the pitch, particularly Ricardo whom also chipped in with some decent goals over the past two seasons.

Next up for the first-team is a home match against Ashford United, whom we beat 1-0 on the opening day of the season, on Saturday 21st October.

Match summary - East Grinstead Town (a)

We ended up losing 2-0 against East Grinstead Town on Tuesday night as our search for consistency continues, writes James Barrett-Sterling.

A goal in each half, from Charlie Postance and Ollie Gill, condemned us to a fourth defeat in five games, although we did dominate most of the game but failed to convert any of our chances.

Team news
Sean O'Toole was given his first start since last season, while Raheem Sterling-Parker, Ola Sogbanmu  Tom Jelly and Bobby Price all returned to the starting line-up. Defender Michael Aziaya made his debut after signing on the morning of the game.

Kick-off
After a quiet opening period, O'Toole got the fit-again Sterling-Parker away on the quarter hour but Tommy Bradford's header on his cross was deflected off target.

Then, a minute later, Sterling-Parker held up a Jelley cross inside the Town box before teeing up Ricky Korboa but his angled shot flew just wide of the far post.

A corner kick on 23 minutes was met by the head of Mekhail McLaughlin at the near post but, again, a defensive shirt got in the way to block it.

We thought we'd broken the deadlock on 33 minutes as Korboa's purposeful run saw him dink a cross to Bradford from inside their area, but the linesman's flag ruled out our man's successful header.

And Town scored with their first real effort on our goal on 43 minutes - a big looping cross by Marcus Elliott was met by an unmarked Postance and his downward header left Billy Bishop rooted to the spot.

HALF-TIME: 1 - 0

Paris Hamilton-Downes had a great chance to level three minutes after the restart but he couldn't guide his free header on a Bradford free kick under the crossbar.

Bradford himself then put a sighter from 18 yards over and a home defender almost diverted a low Sterling-Parker cross past his own keeper as we kept pushing.

But Town still looked dangerous utilising the high ball and, on one such occasion, Bishop twice failed to grasp the ball under pressure but McLaughlin was on hand to block Elliott's shot away from an almost empty net.

Korboa flashed a low cross along their six yard box on 71 minutes but no-one in red was on hand to turn the ball home.

And Gill wrapped up the points for Town a few minutes later, twisting and turning down the middle before unleashing a 20 yard effort that dipped past Bishop.

Match summary - Guernsey (a)

Our rollercoaster run of results continued as we followed up our win at Horsham with defeat in the Channel Islands, writes James Barrett-Sterling.

Team news
Ryan Healy filled in at right back as Jordan Cheadle also returned to the defence. Young Reece Cave was handed his full debut in midfield and Josh Phillips came back in to lead the line. The returning Sean O'Toole, plus the likes of Levi Phillips and Stuart Searle, was named among the substitutes.

Kick-off
Our hosts started brightly and one ball over the top found Dave Rihoy unmarked in our box but, rather than trying his luck as Billy Bishop came to narrow the angle, he weakly squared the ball and our keeper easily collected it.

But, on five minutes, another long punt forward was shifted out wide and Ross Allen got in on goal. He dinked an effort over Bishop and Rihoy was completely unmarked at the back post to turn the ball  home.

We struggled to muster much going forwards for long periods, although we did break once with Tommy Bradford getting Ricky Korboa away over halfway. In turn, he played a one-two with Mickel Miller to burst into Guernsey's box but a last-ditch tackle prevented any shot.

Then, on 33 minutes, Miller took aim on the far side of the pitch from about 18 yards but his effort just failed to curl inside the far post.

We were awarded a free kick almost in the exact same position a few minutes later but the trusty left foot of Cheadle flashed the ball just off target with Dennis sprawling.

HALF-TIME: 1 - 0

But it was a free kick opportunity that got us back into the game on 53 minutes as Miller was fouled contesting a long Cheadle pass on the edge of their box.

Bradford stepped up and hit a low shot past the wall and beyond Dennis for his second of the season.

And we should've taken the lead just a minute as the Guernsey defence twice failed to deal with a Bishop goal kick until Miller found himself one-on-one with Dennis whom managed to deflect the shot away before watching sub Levi Phillips turn the loose ball wide of the gaping net.

And it was a costly miss as our hosts retook the lead on the hour - Rihoy chased a chipped ball into our box before teeing up Young whom, after making some space, beat Bishop and the covering Cheadle with a left-footed shot from 10 yards.

Guernsey striker Ross Allen then became a thorn in our side - he first struck our crossbar with a close range effort on 68 minutes, then burst through and drew a foul from Bishop who had raced out of his area to contest the high ball.

Our net minder escaped with a yellow card and Guernsey rattled our crossbar again with the resultant free kick.

And we escaped yet again on 83 minutes as Rihoy took up a similar position as to his earlier assist but this time his pullback was smashed against our bar by an incoming teammate.

But we couldn't find another goal despite sub Peter Adeniyi making some space in their box in added time before teeing up Healy but his cross-shot was deflected away by a green shirt.

Match summary: Horsham (a)

We got back to winning ways, combined with a rare clean sheet, as we beat Horsham on Tuesday night, writes James Barrett-Sterling.

Team news
Peter Adeniyi came back into the side and Ricky Korboa was handed his first full start of the season. Kalvin Morath-Gibbs was back among the substitutes.

Kick-off
And Billy Bishop earned his shut-out from early; first he palmed away a firm drive from Scott Kirkwood on the quarter hour, then smothered a daisy cutter by Will Robinson.

But our forwards certainly looked capable of scoring too and, with 38 minutes on the clock, Mickel Miller rose to head a deep Tommy Bradford cross past James Fernandes for his 10th of the season.

Mekhail McLaughlin almost doubled our lead in similar fashion before half-time, but he guided a free kick delivery went just wide.

We came out the blocks after the break and Miller was unfortunate to see an effort smash back off the home crossbar.

Bradford and Korboa both also came close to adding to the score, but Fernandes denied them on separate occasions.

We saw out the game surviving only one real scare with 15 minutes to go - George Landais worked some space in our box but Bishop rushed out to block the shot away.

Post-match - Mekhail McLaughlin

Defender Mekhail McLaughlin believes we can get back to winning ways quickly after the club suffered back-to-back defeats last week, writes James Barrett-Sterling.

After losing our unbeaten league record 2-0 away at Hastings United, we travelled to Heybridge Swifts for an FA Trophy tie last Saturday and lost by the same scoreline.

And, with only one clean sheet so far this season to date, McLaughlin wants us to at least get back to doing what we does best – scoring goals.

“We tried a slightly more defensive formation against Heybridge and perhaps focussing on that side meant we didn’t play our normal game,” said McLaughlin, whom made only his third full start of the season last weekend.

“We wanted to stretch the game by using wing backs but we found it difficult to keep the ball up their end for long periods.

“We made a change after half-time and we played much better but, credit to them, we just couldn’t get that breakthrough.”

But, despite exiting our third cup competition of the season, McLaughlin is confident he and his teammates can get back on track quickly.

“We do need to get back to winning ways but we haven’t lost any confidence inside the dressing room,” the 21-year old revealed.

“We’ll go into the next game with a positive mindset. Our forwards will always provide a goal threat and we just need to get that balance between the attack and defence sorted.”

We next travel to play Horsham on Tuesday 10th October (kick-off 7.45pm).

Match report - Heybridge Swifts (a - FA Trophy)

We bowed out of the FA Trophy as a spirited second-half performance wasn't enough to overcome Heybridge Swifts, writes James Barrett-Sterling.

Team news
Paris Hamilton-Downes, Ryan Healy and Danny Dudley all returned. Reece Cave was named among the substitutes.

Kick-off
The game started evenly with both teams trying to keep the ball on the deck, and the first real sight of goal was worked by Mickel Miller on eight minutes but his shot went straight at Sambridge.

A few niggly fouls and offsides kept the game from flowing freely, but we were grateful for an alert Billy Bishop on 15 minutes - he clawed away an in-swinging corner that threatened to curl inside the far post.

And our keeper was at it again four minutes later as Sam Bantick put over a cross-shot that almost dipped over our man in green but, again, he managed to palm the ball away.

Kreshnic Krasniqi then outmuscled Mekhail McLaughlin down our left but thankfully Bobby Price stabbed away his firm low cross from incoming opponents.

But it was all Swifts and they eventually opened the scoring on the half-hour - McLaughlin headed out a long throw into our box but the ball was returned low and hard for Lewis Godbold to turn in from six yards.

It was no more than our hosts deserved as we were failing to build any serious forward momentum - the Swifts defence were winning the majority of high balls and 50/50s.

We almost fell further behind in stoppage time as Bantick yet again delivered from out wide and this time saw the ball cannon back off the crossbar.

HALF-TIME: 1 - 0

The second-half started more evenly as we began to get a small foothold in the game, and Ola Sogbanmu almost nicked Tommy Bradford's free kick on 50 minutes over Sambridge.

Swifts responded with another long throw into our box but Price bravely blocked away an attempted volley inside our area.

Fans hearts were in their mouths on 53 minutes as Bantick met Harrison Chatting's cross with a free header in front of our goal - but the net didn't bulge as the ball landed behind the net.

We woke up and, for the next half hour, we were the better side beginning with Price bursting in on a Miller pass but his low cross was cleared just in front of the lurking Phillips.

Ricky Korboa and Peter Adeniyi were then introduced, meaning we went to a flat back four and pushed Sogbanmu up as striker - a tactical move that paid dividends.

Hamilton-Downes and Bradford combined to get the ball into our new number nine just after the hour. He teed up Adeniyi whom was blocked out but Price battled for possession and then took Bradford's return pass on into their box. Our captain's low angled shot beat Sambridge but not a lunging defender in front of the empty net.

Then both McLaughlin and Dudley blocked efforts inside our box and we broke forward with Korboa whom travelled over halfway. Adeniyi then threaded a pass through to Sogbanmu whom could've shot in front of goal. Instead, with Sambridge in no man's land, he squared the ball to Korboa who saw his effort blocked away by a scurrying defender.

Then Sogbanmu got beyond the home defence before picking out Korboa just inside their box. He couldn't get the ball fully under control but it broke loose for the completely unmarked Bradford. He had time and tried to bend the ball low around the oncoming Sambridge, but there wasn't enough curl on the ball to take it the right side of the far post.

It was so frustrating not to turn our dominance into goals and Bishop remained alert to gather a header during a rare Swifts attack.

We had a shout for a penalty on 80 minutes as Adeniyi shuffled a pass into Korboa on the 18 yard line but the referee judged the tackle on our forward as fair. The ball found its way out to the supporting Hamilton-Downes but his firm drive on goal was deflected away.

But, as we kept pushing, Swifts got a break three minutes from time as Adeniyi got caught in possession 25 yards for our goal and a simple pass to the advanced Juan Loque saw him beat Bishop and seal his team's victory.

Match summary - Hastings United (a)

We suffered a first league defeat of the season as we failed to score for the first time this season, writes James Barrett-Sterling.

Team news
Mekhail McLaughlin and Antone Douglas came into the defence, while Ola Sogbanmu returned to the centre of our midfield.

Despite bossing the early possession, we struggled to work Charlie Horlock in the home goal and Hastings took a shock lead on 18 minutes as Sam Beale got played in one-on-one and slotted the ball beyond Billy Bishop.

Mickel Miller had our two best opportunities of the first-half but firstly Horlock denied him, then Tom Vickers threw himself at his second attempt after United had taken the lead.

Bishop was equal to a shot by Sam Adams not long after the break, but Bobby Price should've hit the target with an angled drive before the hour.

United perhaps should've been reduced to 10 men after Kenny Pogue, who had already been booked, scythed down one of our boys from behind - the forward was immediately substituted by the home side after the referee simply gave him a talking to.

In-form striker Raheem Sterling-Parker managed to get through on goal shortly afterwards but, as our man attempted to round the keeper, Horlock did enough to deny him.

But we couldn't break through and United gave themselves some daylight as sub Davide Rodari threaded a shot from distance in beyond Bishop.

Interview - Ricky Korboa

Forward Ricky Korboa made an instant impact as he returned to action for the first time this season, writes James Barrett-Sterling.

We shared eight goals with visiting Ramsgate on Saturday during a game in which our unbeaten league record came under serious threat before ending 4-4.

And Korboa, whom missed the start of this season with a hamstring injury, came off the bench to play a key part in two of our second-half goals.

“I’m really pleased to be back but we aren’t happy with that result. We feel its two points dropped,” said Korboa.

“We didn’t do well in the first-half and gave away sloppy goals. We needed to move the ball quicker and then we hit three goals after the break.”

There were three goals in six minutes during the first-half as Raheem Sterling-Parker reduced our two-goal deficit before the break.

We dominated the start of the second-half but Ramsgate’s Rory Smith plundered his hat-trick just after the hour mark.

Enter Korboa...

He won the corner that Mickel Miller bundled in at the near post then, after Jordan Cheadle’s 20 yard free kick made it 3-3, the tricky forward teed up Miller for his second of the afternoon.

“We always say never give up and keep running until the last whistle, so we did well to get ourselves in front but it was so disappointing to concede late on,” added Korboa, referring to Smith’s close range header on 86 minutes.

“We need to stop letting in so many goals but we’ll learn from this and work hard to cut it out our game.”

And Korboa, whom hit 20 goals last season despite suffering with his injury on-and-off since last December, cannot wait to get back to work.

“I’ve really missed it over the last two months. It’s great to get back on the pitch and I want to play my part in helping the club achieve promotion this season.”

We travel to Hastings United tonight (Tuesday) before entering FA Trophy action on Saturday away at Heybridge Swifts.
