Match summary - South Park (a - Ryman League Cup)

It was another tight affair against South Park but this time we lost by a single goal and exited this season's Ryman League Cup competition, writes James Barrett.

Team news: Boss Peter Adeniyi made eight changes from the league encounter on Saturday - there were full debuts for Francis Sey, Dominique Bongo and Kaleed Henry, a first start of the season for young keeper Jack Minchin and the likes of Kingsley Aikhionbare, Sean O'Toole and Ryan Healy were also given the chance to impress.

We led at half-time as Tommy Bradford was at it again, converting a free kick just outside of their box on 32 minutes.
Healy probing forward at South Park

But this time we couldn't keep out South Park's attackers and goals by James McElligott (65) and Jake Roberts ten minutes from the end curtailed our cup run for another year.

Player interview - Stuart Searle

A familiar face came out of retirement recently as goalkeeper Stuart Searle answered our distress call before the recent home game against South Park, writes James Barrett.

We faced a goalkeeping crisis just 24 hours before that game as regular shot-stopper Alex Kozakis was injured and the on-loan Billy Bishop was recalled by Hampton & Richmond Borough less than a week into his stay at Colston Avenue.
Searle kept a clean sheet during his
return to Colston Avenue
But 37-year old Searle, who last played a competitive first-team match two years ago, dusted off his gloves to help us keep up our Ryman Division One South promotion aspirations.

"I wasn't nervous at the prospect, I just hoped my body wouldn't let me down," smiled Searle.

"It all happened rather quickly - I received calls from Paul Dipre and my old Carshalton goalkeeping coach Les Cleevely on the Friday afternoon. Thankfully I had the weekend free and, after a little consideration, I was only too happy to help out my old club."

Searle, during a career that has also seen him at Chelsea, Watford and MK Dons, had previously made over 350 appearances as a Robin and this latest one ended with a clean sheet as Tommy Bradford's 22nd minute free kick was enough to separate the two sides.

"The first 15 minutes were quite frenetic but I settled into it after that," he added. "It was pleasure playing with a team that wants to pass and move, and I had to make a couple of saves - it was an enjoyable experience.

"But there was an article in the programme that highlighted a match from 15 years ago and my name was in it! It's a young man's game and I won't be making a habit of doing this."

As Searle continues a fruitful coaching career with Chelsea Ladies, plus he managed Met Police Youth to the fourth round of the FA Youth Cup earlier this year, he didn't rule out returning to his local club one day in that capacity.

"Peter Adeniyi's footballing philosophy is appealing to me, plus the club backs its academy by giving talented youngsters a chance which is fantastic.

"There is always room for improvement but I was very impressed with the players in front of me against South Park. I'd be happy to offer my services to the club if there were opportunities in the future."

Match summary - South Park (h)

A single goal was enough to seal all three points against visiting South Park, writes James Barrett.

Team news: The pre-match talk surrounded the return of Robins goalkeeping legend Stuart Searle whom came out of retirement to help us as Alex Kozakis was injured and the on-loan Billy Bishop was suddenly recalled back by parent club Hampton and Richmond Borough. Paris Hamilton-Downes also returned to skipper the side, while youngsters Harrison Street, Jack Minchin and Dominique Bongo were named on the bench.

It was end-to-end stuff for the first 15 minutes as both sides created many half-chances but the only goal of the game came on 22 minutes - Tommy Bradford buried a 20 yard free kick high to keeper James Wastell's right for his 15th of the season.

Netbuster: Bradford curls home the winner
Wastell had to come off injured not long after but, despite an outfield player having to go between the sticks for the visitors, we failed to add to our advantage.

At the other end, Searle was called into action a couple of times during the 90 minutes and you can read an interview with him about the whole experience here (it's within the November tab).

Match summary - Faversham Town (h)

We made it five unbeaten as we came from behind to beat Faversham Town on Monday evening, writes James Barrett.

Team news: There was a debut for new goalkeeper Billy Bishop as injury forced Alex Kozakis to miss his first action of the season, while Sean O’Toole and Jack Minchin came onto the bench.

Chances were exchanged during a goalless first 45 minutes but Town keeper Ben Bridle-Card saved well from both Josh Phillips and Mickel Miller, while Kalvin Morath-Gibbs cleared a Jack Steventon header off the line at the other end.

HALF-TIME: 0 – 0

Despite starting on the front foot after the break, the deadlock was broken by the visitors as Mobolaji Dowadu beat Bishop to a free kick delivery to head home on 58 minutes.

But we were level just two minutes later as Ricky Korboa got Miller in on goal and he rounded the advancing Bridle-Card before seeing his shot beat the recovering Matt Bourne to make it all-square.

The game looked like it was heading towards a draw but the same combination linked again with five minutes to go and this time Miller clinically finished past the visiting keeper for his thirteenth of the season.

The result put us briefly into second place in the league but Tuesday's nights results leave us in third ahead of our game against South Park this coming weekend.

More photos from the game can be viewed here.

Next up: We welcome South Park on Saturday 19th November before we travel to theirs for our rearranged Ryman League Cup tie on Wednesday 23rd November.

Squad update - new signing

A new addition has been made to the first-team squad today (Monday 14th), writes James Barrett.

Goalkeeper Billy Bishop has arrived from Hampton and Richmond Borough on a non-contract basis and can be selected by boss Peter Adeniyi for our game against Faversham Town if required.

Bishop has previously been at AFC Wimbledon and has also had a spell playing for Ange IF in Sweden.

Our game vs Faversham Town kicks-off at 7.45pm tonight.

Player interview - Alex Kozakis

There was nothing statuesque about our impressive win over promotion rivals Greenwich Borough on Saturday - unless the first goal celebration is taken into account, writes James Barrett.

We won 2-0 at Middle Park Avenue thanks to goals by captain Bobby Price and Josh Phillips, with the former's saluted by some players going on to perform a 'Mannequin Challenge' in front of our dug out.

Kozakis has played in every game
so far this season.
And the victory meant we moved up to fourth in the current Ryman Division One South standings ahead of a game against Faversham Town tonight (Monday 14th).

"I think this was one of our biggest results, and better performances, of the season so far," said goalkeeper Alex Kozakis. "They were difficult to break down but we dominated from start to finish and the goals came after half-time.

"I think this is our first win against a side in the top three this season, despite putting in some good performances, and I think it shows both ourselves and other clubs that we can compete at the top."

The clean sheet against Greenwich was only our third in 15 matches but Kozakis believes his working relationship with Jahmahl King and Kalvin Morath-Gibbs is improving all the time.

"Jahmahl is a commanding presence, Kalvin is a good communicator and they are both decent in the air," he elaborated.

"It hasn't always been easy but we strive to be organised at all times and we showed on Saturday what we are capable of, and I include the full backs in that too."

Kozakis wasn't a part of the celebration which was sparked by Price's goal (which can be viewed here) but he did reveal who was behind it.

"I didn't think it would happen so I began focussing on the restart before I realised!" he smiled.

"The boys had been talking about it before the game - I seem to remember Kingsley Aikhionbare being the main instigator. It just shows the team spirit within this squad however, we are like brothers to each other."

Our game against Faversham Town kicks-off at 7.45pm on Monday 14th November.

Match report - Greenwich Borough (a)

Two second-half goals cemented a fabulous away win at high-flying Greenwich, writes James Barrett.

Team news: Josh Phillips came in for the absent Sean O'Toole from last Saturday's draw against Hastings.

Both sides started with their tails up but it was Sekou Kaba that hit the first shot on target which keeper Jordan Beeney palmed round the post on five minutes.

Attacks were being traded at will and a lot of headers were being contested as defences were given early work, but Beeney was again in action on 13 minutes as he got down to smother a Phillips drive that lacked any real power.

Getting it forward: Sekou Kaba
Phillips contested for a decent cross by Jordan Hibbert a few minutes later but Britnell cleared the ball away as our man tried to set himself from eight yards.

Borough almost took the lead on 23 minutes as we lost possession in our own half and Michael Power got beyond Kalvin Morath-Gibbs on a through pass. Alex Kozakis came out to narrow the angle and the forward managed to dink the ball goalwards but thankfully Jahmahl King got back and steered it away from the empty net.

We continued to look good in possession but Borough's robustness meant they always carried a threat, although through balls by both sides were somewhat wayward for a period.

One spell of passing, on 28 minutes, involved half a dozen players looking for a gap to exploit in the home defence - finally Phillips got a glimpse of goal but he failed to work Beeney.

Kozakis was called into action on 39 minutes as Kaba did well to hold up Britnell inside our area but he teed up Pritchard who was denied by our shot stopper.

Then we had a big chance to go in one-up at the break - Kaba won a Kozakis goal kick for Tommy Bradford to get Mickel Miller off down the right. He eventually squared a pass which Korboa could only help on by the penalty spot and Phillips, who was unmarked, side-footed the ball back across the far post with the goal at his mercy.

HALF-TIME: 0 - 0

King and Glenn Wilson both made brave interceptions as the second-half started lively, but we made the breakthrough on 57 minutes.

Bobby Price began the move deep inside our half and, as we broke, Bradford played Korboa in down the right and our captain, whom hadn't stopped running through the middle, crashed the delivered cross past Beeney for his third of the season.

Borough tried to respond straightaway but Morath-Gibbs and King hurled themselves at two successive pot shots, the former getting a whack in the face during the process.

We kept things tight and scored the second on 67 minutes - Kaba showed strength to win possession before Adeniyi picked it up and slalomed past two opponents into their box. He drew Beeney to the near post before squaring for Phillips to slide the ball into the back of the net.

Greenwich made a couple of substitutes, and the tackles were now flying in as players on both sides picked up yellow cards, but our backline resisted Borough’s forward advances.

Kingsley Aikhionbare came on for Miller for the last 15 minutes, and made sure the home defence were kept on their toes, but it was Kozakis earning his corn as he caught two inviting crosses under pressure, while King blocked an attempt by Power from 12 yards.

We almost added a gloss to our victory in stoppage time as Korboa showed great pace to get down the left and eventually square a ball in but Pilbeam just met it in front of the incoming Aikhionbare.
All smiles: Phillips celebrates
at the final whistle

Player interview - Tommy Bradford

Fireworks came early for our fans on Saturday as returning forward Tommy Bradford lit up Colston Avenue during the 4-4 draw against Hastings United, writes James Barrett.

Bradford, making his first full start after over a month out injured, hit an unusual hat-trick - all penalties - as the game ebbed and flowed towards its high-scoring conclusion.

The point was enough to keep us in the top five of the Ryman Division One South but the 21-year old rued our failure to capitalise on a bright opening to the game.

Bradford added another match ball
to his collection on Saturday
“We began well and scored early doors but for some reason we relaxed a bit and they picked us off with three quick goals,” said Bradford, whom won and subsequently converted a spot-kick awarded in the fifth minute.

“At half-time we spoke about keeping composed and the need to be braver because we felt we were still in the game.

“But, again, it was disappointing to get ourselves 4-3 in front only to concede again. Hastings were well-organised but three of their goals came via set-pieces and that’s something we have to improve on.”

Hastings shook off that early goal to go into the break 3-1 up thanks to two headed goals by centre back Steve Watt and a fine curling effort from Harry Stannard.

But Mickel Miller’s eleventh of the season reduced the arrears on 51 minutes before Bradford then buried two more penalties as we led again before the hour.

Watt had the last laugh however as he arrowed a cross/shot in from a narrow angle on 64 minutes to complete his own treble and the afternoon’s goalscoring exploits.

“I’ve scored two penalties in a match before but never three,” smiled Bradford.

“We could’ve had a fourth for handball late on (a free kick on the edge was eventually given) but I’d of let Ricky take it – my legs felt so heavy!”

Bradford’s hat-trick took him to 14 for the season overall, three behind Korboa and three in front of Miller, but the diminutive playmaker claimed all three aren’t focusing too much on personal glory.

“I couldn’t believe Ricky wouldn’t stop scoring when I was out injured, I was like come on,” he laughed, “but, no, we don’t put our competitiveness ahead of the team.

“None of us are greedy and are just as happy to pass or set somebody else up if they are in a better position. We all just want the team to succeed.”

Our next game is away at South Park for a second round Ryman League Cup tie on Wednesday 9thNovember (kick-off 7.45pm).

Match report - Hastings United (h)

The crowd at Colston Avenue were treated to eight goals, two hat-tricks and plenty of entertainment as we drew 4-4 with Hastings United, writes James Barrett.

Team news: There were two changes from Monday night's 5-0 victory over Walton Casuals as Sean O'Toole and Tommy Bradford came back into the side.

And the first goal of the afternoon arrived on just five minutes as Sam Cole halted Tommy Bradford's run into his area illegally and our man sent keeper Lenny Pidgeley the wrong way.

United responded with Frannie Collin blasting high over Alex Kozakis' bar and an unmarked Simon Johnson should've done better when he connected with a deep cross that he deflected wide.

O'Toole sets off on a forward run
But we were still dominating possession and two through balls for Ricky Korboa and Mickel Miller just carried too much weight, while the former did get in on goal on 20 minutes but he was halted by the linesman's flag.

Sekou Kaba and Korboa both had shots blocked but the visitors started to put us under some pressure and they equalised on 29 minutes.

A long diagonal free kick by Pidgeley on halfway was met by Steve Watt and his unchallenged header beat Kozakis.

Their tails up, United came again and Jack Harris put a header millimetres over our bar before they took the lead as Harry Stannard cut in on his right foot on the far side and curled a shot beyond the dive of Kozakis on 34 minutes.

And things got worse just two minutes later as we gave away a sloppy corner and Watt again climbed highest to head home his second of the game.

It took us a while to rediscover our composure but, when we did, Pidgeley was equal to efforts by Peter Adeniyi and Korboa just before the break.

HALF-TIME: 1 - 3

The blistering pace of the game continued straight after half-time as Miller gathered possession deep inside our half, rode three tackles as he charged towards goal but eventually blazed a shot over from the edge of United's area.

The visitors came back and Watt nodded a Stannard cross into the path of Ollie Rowe but he saw his header smack back off the bar and we cleared the ball away.

And, on 51 minutes, we reduced the arrears as Korboa picked out Adeniyi inside their box and he held up the pass before nonchalantly teeing up Miller whom guided a low shot into the bottom far corner.

A Stannard humdinger whistled past Kozakis' right-hand post as United tried to reinstate their two-goal advantage but, on 56 minutes, we were level as Korboa's pace drew a foul inside their box and Bradford this time smashed home the spot-kick.

And we were given a third penalty three minutes as Bradford and Pidgeley clashed on a through ball, which the referee deemed as a foul by the keeper, and our man swept home a confident shot to complete his hat-trick.

But we allowed United to get back into it again on 64 minutes - Watt won a long throw into our box before turning and arrowing in from a tight angle to complete both his treble and a mad-cap 19 minutes.

But there was still no let up from either side as each looked to gain the lead yet again and Miller had a goal chalked off for a tight offside, before Kalvin Morath-Gibbs bravely won a tackle near our area and passed the ball to Adeniyi. He set off over halfway before playing Korboa in down the left but, instead of shooting, he checked back inside their box and lost out to a recovering defender.

Brendan Murphy-McVey was thrown on to bolster our forward line in place of Jahmahl King on 77 minutes - it was a bold attacking statement and we began to create more chances, but Adeniyi had a shot blocked by Alex Akrofi and Korboa couldn't finish off Miller's neat run and pass.

Good day's work: Bradford and
his well-earned match ball
We kept up the pressure in and around their box as the clock showed five minutes remaining but both Bradford and Korboa were denied by some staunch United defending.

Our last real attempts on goal came when Miller tested Pidgeley with an angled 18 yard free kick and, from the resultant corner, Korboa eventually fed a pass into Miller whom did well to spin his marker but he rifled a shot into the near side-netting.

More photos from the game can be viewed here.

Player interview - Bobby Price

Captain Bobby Price has hailed our return to form ahead of this weekend's fixture, writes James Barrett.

We won 2-1 against struggling Chatham Town last Saturday before comfortably seeing off Walton Casuals 5-0 at home on Monday evening.

Those six points have put us firmly back among the leading Ryman Division One South pack as we prepare to welcome Hastings United to Colston Avenue this Saturday.

“We needed to get back to winning ways after dropping points, particularly against Molesey and Ramsgate recently, so these results were massive,” said Price.

“We haven’t changed our approach to games too much but we have been guilty of creating a lot of chances and not taking them. Monday night showed everyone again what we are capable of though.”

We were two-up at the break against Casuals thanks to on-loan defender Mekhail McLaughlin’s header and a first of the season for Sekou Kaba

Then the forwards took over – Mickel Miller and Ricky Korboa continued their fine individual forms by grabbing one each either side of Tommy Bradford’s triumphant cameo.

The diminutive playmaker, who has missed a month of football through injury, was given a hero’s reception when introduced on 71 minutes and he repaid the fans' faith with his eleventh goal of the season just seven minutes later.

“It was a high tempo game but I think their confidence dropped after our second goal and we could’ve scored more really,” Price added.

“It’s great to see Tommy back, he’s been a massive loss to the squad and I think he probably could’ve helped to turn those recent draws into wins.

“His return provides more competition of places too, but all three have been brilliant since the opening day and no-one is going to be happy facing them.”

As for Price himself, the 21-year old revealed he is relishing being skipper of the club he has been at since a youth.

"We have a lot of leaders in our squad so I was as surprised as anyone when Peter called upon me at the start of the season.

"It's been a learning curve but it's given me confidence and I enjoy leading the boys out. I haven't lost a game as captain and, in fact, I haven't even lost a coin toss yet!"

Our game against Hastings United is on Saturday 5th November (kick-off 3pm)

Match report - Walton Casuals (h)

We put in a five star performance as we blew away visiting Walton Casuals, writes James Barrett.

Team news: Kalvin Morath-Gibbs and Josh Phillips were reinstated to the starting eleven, while Tommy Bradford was named on the bench after being out injured for a month.

Hibbert battles for possession
Mickel Miller almost opened the scoring within the first minute as we won a free kick 20 yards from goal, but his low drive fizzed the wrong side of Denzel Gerrar's left-hand post.

That set the tone for the evening however; there was a slick top surface and both sides played at a high tempo throughout, with Gerrar getting behind a firm Jordan Hibbert strike and Alex Kozakis claiming a swerving Malachi Hudson effort.

But our first goal of the evening came after Miller won a corner off Gerrar on 16 minutes. Price collected a headed clearance on the delivery and found Sekou Kaba whose measured cross back into the box was headed home by the unmarked Mekhail McLaughlin.

Ricky Korboa then sprang into life a couple of minutes later and he appeared to be hauled down inside the Casuals area but nothing was given.

Our pressing game was also in evidence tonight, led by the continuous instructions of the commanding Jahmahl King and typified by Miller whom lost the ball on halfway but showed tenacity to win it back as Casuals threatened to pour forward, and that complimented our long spells of possession which were met by a stubborn visiting defence until the 34th minute.

Hibbert won a tackle on halfway and played Phillips in down the right. The young striker held up play before putting Price in and our captain slid a pass across from the byline which Kaba bravely met to ram home his first goal for the club.

Casuals won a free kick on the far side five minutes later which Jordan Cheadle whipped in low and it took a slight deflection off the lunging McLaughlin, but Kozakis instinctively palmed the ball round his near post and we went into the break two goals to the good.

HALF-TIME: 2 - 0

Sean O'Toole was introduced for McLaughlin at the start of the second-half and, just after Hibbert fired a shot in from distance that didn't trouble Gerrar, we grabbed our third of the evening.

We built some pressure down the left before Korboa finally found Kaba whom played a delightful straight through ball for Miller to get in on goal before he delicately dinked it over the oncoming Gerrar.

Casuals created a chance three minutes later as Gabriel Odunaike was left unmarked in our box to latch onto an inswinging free kick but his touch was heavy and he blazed the ball well over with his second.

O'Toole and Morath-Gibbs then both made good interceptions as we quelled any form of positive Casuals play, but the latter had to be replaced by Brendan Murphy-McVey just after the hour mark.

Peter Adeniyi, now filling in at centre back, took the ball over halfway on 67 minutes before Korboa and Miller swapped two one-twos to get the latter in on goal, but the pace of the final pass just took it away from him.

Then it was Kaba's turn to wow the crowd as he rode two tackles while taking the ball forward over 50 yards before Coleman blocked Murphy-McVey's attempted through ball with his arm. The free kick was fed into Korboa who spun at the near post and saw his shot blocked and Price's successful attempt at putting in the rebound was denied by the linesman's flag.

There was a second disallowed goal just a minute later as Miller tucked home Philips' cross/shot from the left from, according to the linesman, an offside position.

Bradford: Back with a bang!
A huge roar greeted the arrival of Bradford on 71 minutes and Miller almost put his returning teammate in on goal 30 seconds later, but the ball just skipped away from his outstretched foot.

But it was like he'd never been away as on 78 minutes Bradford gathered a chipped Miller pass inside the box. His first shot on the turn was blocked by Gerrar but he reacted quickest to the loose ball to fire his 11th of the season into the top far corner.

We kept our clean sheet intact thanks to the fingertips of Kozakis deflecting away another dangerous Cheadle free kick on 86 minutes and Korboa added the gloss to our victory by thumping home a low 18 yard drive across Gerrar just as the game entered time added on.

More photos from the game can be viewed here.

Academy trials - new information

The details for our next set of trials for our successful academy have now been released, as below:
