Interview - Tommy Bradford

They say good things come in small packages and that's certainly true of our homegrown goal machine, writes James Barrett.

Tommy Bradford stepped up from the youth team here at Colston Avenue to make his first-team debut aged just 17 and, fast forward five seasons later, the 5ft 7" forward is enjoying his most bountiful campaign - which includes three hat-tricks - yet.

His goal during our recent 3-2 defeat at South Park was his 30th of the season but, while that leaves Bradford top of the Ryman South goalscoring charts, the loss dented our play-off aspirations as others around us take advantage of games in hand.

"Everyone, including me, was massively disappointed after the South Park game as we felt we were the better team overall," said Bradford.

"So I didn't even register my thirtieth until later that evening when people started sending me congratulations.

"But now it's sunk in I do feel proud of course. Most people would expect a traditional 'number nine' to reach that figure but this feels even better as I've mostly played just off our strikers or out wide this season."

The 22 year-old made that aforementioned debut in 2013, when we were involved in a Ryman Premier relegation fight, and the first of his 78 goals in Robins red to date came as part of a treble against Hampton and Richmond Borough.

"We were actually on a good run of form, which eventually helped us to stay up, but there wasn't pressure on me to come in and just start scoring however," he added.

"I cannot compare the feeling I experienced when that first goal went in to anything else, then we got a penalty in the second-half and (former team-mate) Nathaniel Pinney knew I was on a hat-trick and so let me take it."

"I've enjoyed playing with many different forwards during my time but Pinney was great to play off, Michael Campbell has great pace and was good to look for, and Dan Summers was a good communicator and great goalscorer."

We next face play-off rivals Greenwich Borough at home and our forward wants his team to get back to the kind of form that saw us go eight games unbeaten before defeats to Hastings United and South Park last week.

"We beat Greenwich at theirs earlier in the season and a repeat of that would be great, but we will all have to work hard and get back to our recent good form," said Bradford.

"And I'm fully focused on adding to my total and helping us to hopefully a positive end to this season."

The first-team take on Greenwich Borough on Saturday 4th March (kick-off 3pm).

Match summary - South Park (a)

We fell to a second defeat this week despite clawing our way back from two-down, writes James Barrett.

Team news: Ricardo Panton and Ryan Healy came in for the injured Paris Hamilton-Downes and Rio Davidson-Phipps.

We started this one better than we did at Hastings and we carved out a good chance within the first 10 minutes but Tommy Bradford guided Ryan Gondoh's cross the wrong side of the far post.
Healy came back into the starting line-up

But, for all our early dominance, the home side took the lead through their top scorer Kieran Lavery whom rifled home from what looked like an offside position - but the referee waved away our protests.

And that lead was doubled just after the half hour mark as, although we cleared a corner delivery, Joe Tupper could only parry a returned shot and Asa Rixon-Nicholls plundered a goal.

However, unlike the capitulation witnessed at Pilot Field last time out, we rolled up our sleeves and, five minutes before the break, reduced the arrears through Gondoh's first goal since he returned to us from Kingstonian last month.

HALF-TIME: 2 - 1

We restored parity just after the hour and it came via a typical source - Bradford was afforded time and space in the home box and he scored his 30th goal of the season, which also solidified his place at the top of the league's goalscoring chart.

Thirty up: Bradford celebrates
We thought we should've had a penalty on 70 minutes when it appeared Gondoh was shoved inside Park's area, but the referee waved play on.

Then sub Josh Phillips thought he'd given us the lead but his header was clawed away by Thomas at full stretch.

The ref did give our hosts a spot-kick of their own six minutes later however when he believed he saw a foul in a crowded penalty area and Chris Smith converted the eventual winning goal.

More photos from the game are available here.

Next up: We welcome Greenwich Borough on Saturday 4th March before we visit Hythe Town on Saturday 11th March.

Captain in long-running saga

Our very own captain Paris Hamilton-Downes will be stretching his legs even after the season has finished, writes James Barrett.

Paris, along with his girlfriend Hannah, will be hitting the streets of London in late April to take part in the 2017 London Marathon.

And the pair are looking to raise funds for charity as part of their endeavour.

"I'm sticking rigidly to a training programme and it's been going well so far, I've been hitting my targets," he said.

"We've chosen to support the Children With Cancer UK charity because of all the fantastic work they do for young patients and their families.

"We want to raise over £2,500 between us but anything we can send their way would be an honour as those children deserve to keep smiling."

If you wish to sponsor the pair on their 26.2 mile journey, you can do so by visiting here.

Everyone at the club wishes Paris and Hannah all the best of luck!

Match summary - Hastings United (a)

Our eight game unbeaten run was halted in comprehensive fashion as we fell to defeat on the Sussex coast, writes James Barrett.

Team news: Peter Adeniyi replaced the injured Sekou Kaba, while Rio Davidson-Phipps came in for Ricardo Panton whom dropped to the bench.

Miller on the move
The travelling faithful might of been relieved before kick-off to see Hastings defender Steve Watt, the hat-trick scoring defender in the reverse fixture back in November, named only as a substitute.

The game remained goalless during the opening exchanges, thanks in the main to two good saves by Joe Tupper, but Hastings took the lead on 24 minutes as Frannie Collin, whom saw his first headed effort blocked, stabbed the loose ball home.

And that lead was doubled on the half hour as an unchallenged Harry Stannard eventually curled home a left-footed shot.

We struggled to get a foothold in the game, despite entering it off the back of six straight wins, and disappointingly finished the first-half without testing home keeper Lenny Pidgeley.

HALF-TIME: 2 - 0

We were grateful to both Tupper and the linesman's flag for denying Hastings a third as our hosts kept up their onslaught after the break, but a third goal did arrive when Jack Evans powered home an impressive volley following a corner kick delivery.

And they added a fourth just four minutes later, via another corner kick, as defender Jerome Sobers rose highest to power home a header.

Ryan Healy and Josh Phillips were thrown on as the clock ticked down and we enjoyed our best attacking spell of the game during the last 15 minutes, but Tommy Bradford fired wide from a good position and both Jordan Hibbert and Mickel Miller were denied by Pidgeley.

Cutting in: Rio Davidson-Phipps
But our miserable night was compounded in the 86th minute as substitute Kieran Hughes-Mason scored perhaps the pick of the goals - an angled left-footed curler which cut across Tupper and dropped inside the top far corner.

That was our heaviest league defeat of the season and, while we remain currently third in the league table, we have now played two more games then most of the clubs around us.

More photos from the game are available here.

Next up: We travel to South Park on Saturday 25th February before Greenwich Borough arrive at ours on Saturday 4th March.

Interview - Jordan Hibbert

We made it six wins in a row after an improved second-half performance saw off a spirited Cray Wanderers, writes James Barrett.

A lacklustre opening 45 saw us behind after defender Lea Dawson capitalised on some poor defending to smash home from six yards, and that despite the fact the visitors were playing with 10 men from the 22nd minute.

But second-half goals by Omar Folkes and Bobby Price saw us solidify our grip on third in the Ryman Division One South ahead of a Tuesday night visit to Hastings United.

Calming presence: Jordan Hibbert
“It was very much a game of two halves,” said midfielder Jordan Hibbert, “as we were disjointed at times and didn’t take advantage of their sending off until the second-half.

“Sometimes that happens but, after we’d collected our thoughts and listened to Peter’s words of encouragement at half-time, we pressed them more and kept on the front foot even after taking the lead.

“Everyone was buzzing afterwards, the team spirit here is high and that’s shared between every player in the squad."

The visiting Wands started the game brightly but, midway through the first-half, Lee Prescott was instantly dismissed for a needlessly high challenge on Sekou Kaba.

But we twice failed to deal with a free kick into ourr area on 37 minutes and Dawson punished us from close range.

We came out looking a different side however and, with Ryan Gondoh in particular pulling the strings, we turned it around with two goals in two minutes just after the hour.

On-loan striker Omar Folkes first pounced to ram home Gondoh’s parried effort from distance, then defender Bobby Price collected a Gondoh through ball before beating keeper Nick Blue from a narrow angle.

Although our promotion charge is on track, the clubs around us do have games in hand, plus the top two – Tooting and Mitcham United and Dorking Wanderers – aren’t dropping points either

“It is a bit frustrating to not see Tooting or Dorking drop points but we can only control what we do, so we’ll look to keep on winning and hopefully that’ll lead us to something by the end of the season,” Hibbert added.

Our trip to Hastings United is on Tuesday 21st February (KO 7.45pm).

Match report - Cray Wanderers (h)

We came from behind to register our sixth win on the bounce and keep our promotion charge on track, writes James Barrett.

Team news: Ricardo Panton came back in at the expense of Peter Adeniyi, whom dropped to the bench.

The visitors started brightly and Lea Dawson headed a free kick at Joe Tupper in the second minute, and they continued to dominate the early possession as our lads showed willing to chase and harry.

Our first real attack came in the eighth minute as Sekou Kaba threaded a through ball for the advanced Panton to gallop onto, but his touch was heavy and the ball ran into keeper Nick Blue.

Danny Haynes, who had already scored six goals against us this season, connected to a low cross on 13 minutes but Paris Hamilton-Downes bravely blocked the shot.

We went up the other end and, as Omar Folkes and Paul Lorraine contested a high ball, Bobby Price picked up the pieces before dinking a shot over the crossbar from 18 yards.

Panton showed good endeavour to be first to a Mickel Miller flick on the left on 20 minutes before finding Folkes. He turned, got the ball out from his feet and beat Blue from 25 yards - but the ball cannoned back off the post.

Creative: two assists for Ryan Gondoh
Then Cray midfielder Lee Prescott went heavily into Kaba on halfway and the referee had no hesitation in producing a red card. Kaba required several minutes treatment and sadly had to leave the field on a stretcher.

But we failed to capitalise and Cray took the lead as we failed twice to clear a free kick delivery into our box and Lea Dawson smashed the loose ball back beyond Tupper from six yards.

That prompted us into action but the closest we came to anything was when Miller showed an injection of pace to get away from his marker and he appeared to be pushed over by the covering Dawson in the area, but the referee waved play on.

HALF-TIME: 0 - 1

We came out more determined in the second-half and put Cray on the back foot, and we thought we'd levelled on 52 minutes when, after Price and Folkes combined inside their box, Miller sidefooted home - but the linesman's flag curtailed the celebrations.

That setback didn't knock us out our stride though because, after jordan Hibbert saw a 20 yard shot drift just wide of Blue's far post, we did equalise.

Ryan Gondoh forced a corner from the gloves of Blue which we took short and eventually our midfielder tried his luck again from distance. The visiting keeper could only parry his second effort and Folkes reacted quickest to ram the loose ball in for his fifth since joining us in January.

Our very next attack ended with Blue doing well to tip over a left-footed curler from Price on the far side, but our adventurous full back wasn't to be denied again on 63 minutes.

Price (left) sees his winning shot fly in
He burst on to a weighted through ball to run clear of the Wands' defence and, as everyone expected him to play the ball across the six yard box, Price instead smashed a low shot inside the far post to the jubilation of the home fans.

There was another flash-point a few minutes later as Miller and Jay Leader clashed and it sparked a melee involving several players - in the end the referee simply booked both protagonists.

We were now in full control and keeping the ball for long spells, with the visitors defending stoutly around their 18 yard box as we pushed and probed.

And when we did find a way through to goal, Blue was equal to attempts by Tommy Bradford, Miller and Gondoh on separate occasions.

Our defenders mopped up a couple of searching balls over the top at various times, and Tupper showed he was still alert as he claimed a dangerous late cross in amongst several bodies, but we comfortably show out the game for another valuable three points.

Manager interview - Peter Adeniyi

Player/manager Peter Adeniyi insists the squad must maintain focus as he continues plotting our escape from the Ryman Division One South, writes James Barrett.

We avenged last season's 7-1 drubbing by Ramsgate on Saturday by returning from the Kent coast with a 2-1 win via goals from Tommy Bradford and Sekou Kaba.

And that fifth win on the spin saw us solidify a grip on third place in the current league standings although, as well as others having games in hand, we do remain 10 points behind leaders Tooting and Mitcham United.

Looking forwards: Peter Adeniyi
"It's an old cliche but we need to just keep going one game at a time and try to maintain the high standards we've recently shown," said Adeniyi.

"If we win our remaining 12 games then we'll end on 100 points - if any other club still finished above us after that then fair play to them.

"The conditions at Ramsgate were terrible but the lads were mentally strong and that got us through. The team spirit here is amazing and perhaps the biggest reason the club is in this promotion mix."

We led the Rams 1-0 at half-time thanks to Tommy Bradford's 29th of the season but the hosts levelled up through Danny Lawrence on 66 minutes.

Ramsgate then lost full back Jake McKenzie to a second yellow card however and midfielder Kaba, whom played the game in the unfamiliar position of left back, made them pay by stabbing home an 81st minute winner.

"I think that just goes to show how important it is to have a strong squad," Adeniyi added.

"I didn't want to break up the defensive trio of Joe, Kalvin and Paris, nor move Jordan out from midfield. Sekou is naturally left-footed and didn't complain when asked to play in an uncommon position for one game.

"Several of the injured lads came on the trip too and that kind of attitude will stand them and the club in good stead moving forwards."

Our next game is at home against Cray Wanderers this coming Saturday and we'll be looking to gain some revenge over the Wands whom beat us twice back in October.

"I like Cray, they are a good club that try and play football like us so it should be an entertaining game," said Adeniyi, "but no doubt the boys will be up for it as we want to collect another three points."

Carshalton Athletic vs Cray Wanderers kicks off at 3pm on Saturday 18th February.

Chelsea Ladies at Colston Avenue

Carshalton Athletic is proud to announce it is to host a top notch European pre-season friendly later this month, writes James Barrett.

Goal: Aluko strikes again for Chelsea Ladies
Chelsea Ladies will entertain Sweden’s FC Rosengård at Colston Avenue on Sunday 12th February (kick-off 11am) as part of their warm-up ahead of a new Women’s Super League One (WSL1) campaign in April.

Blues manager Emma Hayes, fresh from guiding her troops to second-place in the league last season, will be picking a team from a squad set to include the likes of:

  •  Pacy forward Eni Aluko whom has over 100 caps for England Ladies and appeared on several television programmes;
  • Midfielder Karen Carney who has just been awarded an MBE for her services to football;
  • Exotic new signings Ramona Bachmann (37 goals for her native Switzerland) and Crystal Dunn (signed from Washington Spirit in the US);
  • Striker Fran Kirby whom cost Chelsea a British record fee and has been dubbed ‘Mini Messi’ by England Ladies manager Mark Sampson.

Chelsea Ladies also famously completed a domestic double in 2015, while FC Rosengård have won their domestic title nine times in total (the most recent coming in 2014).

Colston Avenue is no stranger to hosting women’s football as it currently boasts it’s own flagship ladies team, which has won several trophies since its inception in 2008, plus several girls teams across all age ranges.

"As a club we are committed to ladies football and there's no better way of celebrating that than by hosting two of the world’s best Ladies teams," said Carshalton Athletic chairman Paul Dipre.

"Having Chelsea choose Colston Avenue is both a privilege and recognition of the quality of our stadium facilities.”

Admission to Chelsea Ladies vs FC Rosengård is £3 for adults and £1 for children (under 18s), so be sure to get down to Colston Avenue and experience a fun day out watching two quality clubs go head-to-head.

Post-match interview - Mike Gilham

Forward Tommy Bradford was at the heart of our 'five star' performance on Saturday as we recorded a fourth consecutive league victory, writes James Barrett.

Visitors Horsham arrived at Colston Avenue unbeaten in eight league games but our irresistible forward play was underlined by Bradford's third hat-trick of a bountiful season for the homegrown talent.

The eventual 5-1 scoreline both pushed us up to third in the Ryman Division One South and Bradford clear as the league's top goalscorer, leaving coach Mike Gilham purring after the final whistle.

"I've lost count of how many match balls Tommy's taken home this season," smiled Gilham.

"He is a top player, great to work with. Not only does he score goals but he's still keen to learn and shows his commitment to the team by doing his defensive duties too.

"But the whole squad has been fantastic recently. We didn't enjoy the best time across December and New Years but we identified a few things to work on, everyone's worked hard and our last four performances have been excellent."

Defender Rio Davidson-Phipps began the rout in the third minute when he cracked home an impressive 18-yard drive in off goalkeeper Josh Pelling's crossbar.

Bradford doubled that lead with a perfectly-placed 20 yard free kick, but Horsham were awarded a spot-kick on 36 minutes which Scott Kirkwood duly converted.

That was as good as it got for the visitors however as Bradford's firm shot on 45 minutes squirmed past Pelling's weak hand, and he completed his treble just after the break with a sublime curled effort.

On-loan striker Omar Folkes' cool side-footed finish on 71 minutes put a gloss on the final score and Gilham believes our promotion aspirations will stay alive if we can manage to keep it tight at the back.

"We know our attacking players can create a goal out of nothing but we can't rely on that alone." he said.

"We've worked hard on the defensive side of our game in training lately and it's paying off. We’ve only conceded two goals in the last four games and they were both penalties.

"If we can keep defensively solid then our forward play will keep speaking for itself and we should be able to stay in the play-off mix."

The first-team's next game is an away trip to Ramsgate on Saturday 11th February (kick-off 3pm).

Match report - Horsham (h)

An exciting performance saw us ease past a spirited Horsham side on Saturday, writes James Barrett.

Team news: There was a debut for the returning Ryan Gondoh in place of Sekou Kaba, while other new signing Joseph Debayo was named among the substitutes.

And we made a cracking start to proceedings as Rio Davidson-Phipps was picked out by a pinpoint 50 yard pass by Jordan Hibbert. The full back neatly took the pass down, cut inside his marker and crashed an 18 yard shot in off the underside of the crossbar.

Stunner: Tommy congratulates Rio
Horsham responded with George Gaskin just two minutes later but Tupper got the merest touch as the striker saw his hit smash back off the crossbar.

This lively tempo was sustained by both sides as they swapped attacks and tackles, with Omar Folkes and Mickel Miller combining to almost set up Tommy Bradford during one flowing move.

Peter Adeniyi went on a trademark slalom on 20 minutes and, after going past two opponents, Scott Harris decided wrapping his arms around the ball from a prone position was the only way to stop our man - he was duly booked.

And the Horsham number 4 was lucky not to receive a second yellow after he scythed down Gondoh 20 yards from goal, but Bradford made him pay by curling the free kick right into the top right corner.

Horsham's Alfie Rogers got between our centre backs three minutes later but Tupper stayed big and saved his shot from a clear position.

But the visitors were given a spot-kick on 36 minutes as Paris Hamilton-Downes' arm got in the way of a Gaskin flick inside our six yard box and Kirkwood smashed it home.

The visitors then decided to make two substitutions - Harris seemed obviously due to his troublesome booking but why Oliver Gill was hauled off was anyone's guess.

Gondoh, thoroughly impressive throughout the game, saw a 20 yard free kick narrowly fly over the crossbar on 43 minutes, but we did restore our two-goal advantage before the break.

As Horsham were dozing,Folkes took a quick free kick and Adeniyi sent the ball on to the unmarked Bradford whom beat the weak hand of Josh Pelling with a firm low shot.

HALF-TIME: 3 - 1

Horsham began the second-half brightly by forcing a couple of corners, but our first real pressure on their goal saw Gondoh break free into the box but, instead of electing to shot, he mis-directed a pass towards the unsuspecting Folkes and it ran harmlessly out of play.

The midfielder did tee up Bradford on 52 minutes however and he sealed his hat-trick with a curled shot from just inside the Hornet's area.

A 'five star' performance!
But the visitors didn't give up and continued to play there part as Miller forced Pelling into a save, Folkes skewed a first-time shot over from a Gondoh pass and Davidson-Phipps bravely blocked an Ashleh Jones effort.

Debayo came on for his debut just after the hour, while Bradford did well to stretch and send a cross in on 68 minutes but Pelling was equal to Folkes' soft header.

Our striker did get on the score sheet not long afterwards though as Gondoh threaded a pass through for Miller and he eventually pulled the ball back for Folkes to sidefoot his fourth goal since joining us last month.

Horsham's afternoon was summed up in the 83rd minute as Gaskin ghosted completely free onto a dinked Rogers ball into our box, but his header flew high and wide of the target.

First-team squad - new arrivals

We have added two fresh faces into the first-team squad this week ahead of our game against Horsham, writes James Barrett.

Firstly, we welcome back Ryan Gondoh whom rejoins from Kingstonian where he has made 10 appearances and scored one goal so far this season.

Gondoh made two first-team appearances for us a few seasons ago before he signed a one-year professional contract with Barnet in 2015, where he made one senior appearance in total.

He is at home both playing up front or coming in off the wings.

The second new signing is 21-year defender Joseph Debayo who arrives from Dulwich Hamlet where he was primarily deployed at centre back.

The 6ft 4" player has also turned out for Hayes and Yeading United and Harrow Borough, while he has also spent time at professional clubs like QPR, Stoke City and Wycombe Wanderers.

The first-team's clash against Horsham kicks off at 3pm at Colston Avenue on Saturday 4th February.
