Match report - Horsham (h)

We rounded off 2017 with a hard-fought victory, and third league double, over visiting Horsham, writes James Barrett-Sterling.

Team news
Three changes from the draw against Corinthian Casuals as Mekhail McLaughlin, Levi Phillips and Brendan Murphy-McVey were all given rare starts. Ex-Robin Hakeem Adelukun lined up within the visitors' first eleven.

Kick-off
The game started pretty even-stevens as both teams probed forward - Horsham forced a couple of corners while we kept the ball well for long periods.

We carved out our first decent chance on nine minutes - a deep Mickel Miller cross was cushioned down by Peter Adeniyi towards the unmarked Phillips but, from six yards out, the young winger failed to connect with the ball.

But we stayed on the front foot with Tommy Bradford and Jordan Cheadle putting pot-shots just over from 20 yards.

And we took the lead on 17 minutes as Cheadle and Phillips combined on the left before the latter picked out Bradford in the box. He controlled the ball sublimely before shifting it onto his left foot and slamming home between Brannon Daly and the near post.

We continued to dominate possession but the Horsham rearguard kept us from further extending our lead, although full back Lewis Hyde had to leave the game on the half-hour after falling awkwardly while preventing Phillips from galloping away.

Much as the game began, the visitors forced a couple of corners in added time and the first of those was met by Scott Kirkwood at the near post, but Bishop was alert enough to get a firm hand on the ball and prevent it from going in.

HALF-TIME: 1 - 0

Horsham started the second-half with a high tempo and Bishop has to be alert to deal with a high up and under into our area on 50 minutes. Liam MacDevitt put our keeper under pressure but thankfully Bobby Price was in hand to block away a follow-up shot inside our box.

We responded as Murphy-McVey lofted a pass for Miller whom drew a foul while shuffling the ball out to Phillips. The referee played an advantage as our winger got inside the Horsham area but his low cross was hacked away.

Then an inswinging free-kick by Cheadle on 57 minutes just eluded Miller and Kalvin Morath-Gibbs at the back post.

We had a glorious chance on the hour to make it 2-0 as Miller broke the Horsham offside trap and latched onto Price's weighted through ball. Our top scorer managed to tee up Murphy-McVey but, from 12 yards, he only managed to strike the ball straight at Daly.

And we were punished for not turning our supremacy into more goals as Horsham's Tony Nwachukwu got free down the left on 67 and his cross was only cleared to Steve Metcalf whom rifled in from 15 yards.

It was frustrating for the home fans to take and we responded by bringing on Ola Sogbanmu and Ricky Korboa to freshen up our attack.

And both made an impact when we re-took the lead on 75 minutes - Sogbanmu won a tackle in the Horsham half, Adeniyi waltzed forward and held off a couple of challenges before slipping Korboa in and he beat Daly with a low angled drive into the bottom far corner.

We looked comfortable again but Nwachukwu threatened our lead on 81 - he burst through and forced Bishop into a low save and the ball bounced favourably for the attacker. All he had to do was lift the loose ball into an unguarded net but he guided it just wide of the far post.

Korboa and Horsham sub Toby House both had chances late on but our man was denied by Daly, while Horsham's top scorer fired wide across goal as the game entered added time.

Match highlights, video interviews and photos all to follow soon.

Match summary - Corinthian Casuals (h)

This game between promotion rivals ended goalless as Corinthian Casuals visited Colston Avenue, writes James Barrett-Sterling.

Team news: Bobby Price, Danny Dudley and Peter Adeniyi all returned following our win at Shoreham. Ex-Robins Omari Hibbert and Matt Reece were on the visitors' bench.

But neither side could make a breakthrough in this one - Casuals had learnt from our 4-2 victory at theirs earlier this season not to let Mickel Miller have time and space, our top scorer surrounded by opponents nearly everytime he looked threatening.

Both keepers made good saves throughout however - our Billy Bishop kept out a close range free, while also Danny Bracken denied Miller and Ricky Korboa either side of half-time.

The point kept both clubs in the play-off positions but allowed Cray Wanderers, whom thrashed Shoreham 7-0, to move into second. League leaders Lewes also won with a 2-0 win against Hastings United.

Match summary - Shoreham (a)

We got back to winning ways against struggling Shoreham in a match that saw two goals for Tommy Bradford and two red cards for our hosts, writes James Barrett-Sterling.

Team news
Young Levi Phillips was handed a full debut in midfield, while Billy Bishop, Ola Sogbanmu and Mohammed-Idris Oshilaja returned from their injury lay-offs. Brendan Murphy-McVey, who has been on loan at Three Bridges recently, was back and named among the substitutes.

While the respective league positions of the two clubs would've given heart to the travelling fans pre-kick off, this game could always be a potential banana skin.

And that adage was made clearer after just 20 minutes as George Gaskin put Shoreham into the lead by converting a deep free kick towards our back post.

But we drew ourselves level 16 minutes later through a reliable source - Mickel Miller firing in his 17th of a productive season to date.

Although he's been quiet on the goalscoring front this season, Tommy Bradford has been one of our most consistent performers and boasts 14 assists this campaign - but today he proved our match-winner.

Firstly, he gave us the lead before the break and then made it 3-1 with his sixth of the season on 58 minutes.

Our hosts grew frustrated as time went on and the referee sent off both Lee Denyer and Odofin O'Niel within two minutes of each other for late challenges on our forwards.

We didn't add to the scoreline but this was a satisfying three points and also completed another league double for us following the 4-1 home win over Shoreham back in August.

Match highlights and photos coming soon.

Match report - Herne Bay (h)

We lost our long unbeaten run as Herne Bay took advantage of our profligacy in front of goal, writes James Barrett-Sterling.

Team news
Peter Adeniyi played the same starting eleven that beat Lewes last time out, with Mohammed Idris-Oshijala named back on the bench. Ex-Robins Kingsley Aikhionbare, Nassim Dukali and Richard Ismail all started for the visitors.

Kick-off
We started brightly and a couple of early crosses into the visitors box just needed a red shirt to guide them goalwards.

Bobby Price was involving himself in a few of our early attacks and a neat through ball by Mickel Miller got our captain free on the right, but his low ball across the six yard area was met by a defensive boot.

Alex Kozakis’ first real action came on 13 minutes as Bay won a free kick just outside of our area. Thomas Carlton stepped up but our keeper got down to parry the curled effort away.

We won a free kick of our own on 22 minutes and Jordan Cheadle whipped it in from deep. Kalvin Morath-Gibbs almost got onto the flight of the ball and it bounced awkwardly for Miller whom almost had a free header on goal, but the chance disappeared.

Miller took a short corner on 28 minutes and, on the return pass, he made space  before drilling a low cross in which was almost turned in to his own goal by a man in yellow.

Cheadle fired a trademark free kick just wide and twice Raheem Sterling-Parker couldn’t divert Miller crosses in from close range as we kept pushing.

Miller burst through on goal on 42 minutes and seemingly only had keeper Benjamin Hunter to beat but a fine last ditch tackle by a recovering defender blocked the shot.

Bay went up the other end and Carlton floated in a free kick from on the near-side and Kozakis had to spring quickly to stop the ball from sneaking in the top far corner.

HALF-TIME: 0 - 0

We should’ve taken the lead in the 50th minute as slip allowed Ricky Korboa to bustle free on the right. He found Sterling-Parker by the penalty spot but he slipped as he turned and shuffled the ball to the unmarked Miller. The slow pass allowed two Bay defenders to recover so Miller returned the compliment but Hunter got a big hand to Sterling-Parker’s side-footed effort – anywhere else and the net would’ve bulged however.

The game opened up a little after that – Kozakis and Danny Dudley rather got in each other’s way while smuggling out a low cross along our six yard area, while Hunter denied Cheadle’s angled drive at full stretch.

Another good chance went beggin on 55 minutes as Miller pulled the ball back to the unmarked Price inside their area but his first-time effort rolled the wrong side of the far post.

And Bay made us pay just after the hour mark as Jake Embery got the better of Morath-Gibbs on a forward pass before rather scruffily lobbing a shot over the oncoming Kozakis and into the back of the net.

We tried to re-establish our forward momentum but found a visiting backline in no mood to give up their team’s lead – several crosses and through balls we cleared away as we probed forward at different times.

We alomost fell further behind on 75 minutes as Embery shanked a shot across our six yard box and Morath-Gibbs was on-hand to clear the spinning ball away from an empty net.

Josh Phillips came on with 10 minutes to go and he already levelled things up with his first touch – Miller did well to win possession on the near touch line and his deep cross was met first-time by our substitute but the ball flew into the side-netting.

And, during Bay’s next attack, Josh Wisson wasn’t picked up as a game of pinball went on inside our box and he rammed a loose deflection home from about four yards out.

We almost reduced the arrears in  added time as Miller and Bradford tried to force something inside their box and, while a sea of yellow tried to block them off, a apss into Korboa saw him force another excellent save from the gloves of Hunter.

Surrey Senior Cup - next round

Our visit to Dorking Wanderers in the second round of the Surrey Senior Cup will be on Tuesday 16th January (kick-off 7.45pm).

Match report - Lewes (h)

We beat the league leaders as a rollercoaster game against Lewes finished 3-2 in our favour, writes James Barrett-Sterling.

Team news
Peter Adeniyi and Tommy Bradford came in for Mohammed Idris-Oshilaja and Paris Hamilton-Downes from Friday's draw at Molesey.

Kick-off
It was clear from the off that the slick top surface would play merry havoc with attempted through balls, so the first real chance of the game fell to our visitors on 11 minutes.

Ronnie Conlon's angled cross was nodded down by Jonte Smith for Ghassimu Sow to seemingly knock on target, but Kalvin Morath-Gibbs threw himself in bravely to block.

Our first effort on their goal came three minutes later as Bobby Price stride forward from halfway. Raheem Sterling-Parker and Mickel Miller created space with their runs but Chris Winterton was equal to our captain's 20 yard drive.

But it got us going and Miller then forced Winterton into parrying an angled shot over his crossbar, but the resultant corner was cleared.

The game began to heat up in the freezing conditions with Danny Dudley making a superb tackle to deny Lewes inside our area and Alex Kozakis getting behind a 20 yarder by Ghassimu Sow.

But our next real chance of the match came on 38 minutes as we won a free kick 25 yards from goal and Jordan Cheadle forced Winterton into a sprawling low save.

And a fine move just before the break saw Bradford, Michael Aziaya and Miller work the ball neatly out to Price on the right. His deep cross was nodded down by Adeniyi but Ricky Korboa didn't catch the ball with a first-time strike and it was cleared.

HALF-TIME: 0 - 0

We made a flying start to the second-half as Miller got Sterling-Parker away and, as our forward careered into the Lewes box, he was barged over by Frankie Chappel. Our number nine picked himself up to take the spot-kick but Winterton guessed right and pushed the effort onto a post.

That was disappointing but our heads didn't drop because, on 52 minutes, Korboa took a pass 20 yards from goal. He took a couple of touches, got it out of his feet and beat Winterton with a superb left-footed drive for his fourth of the season.

Bradford almost doubled our lead shortly after as he thrashed a shot just off target from a tight angle, but we didn't have to wait long before we went two-up.

Sterling-Parker neatly turned on halfway and was clattered as he shifted the ball forward. The referee waved play on as Bradford took it on and eventually got it out wide to Miller whom strode into the box before beating the dive of Winterton with a firm shot inside the far post.

Colston Avenue was now rocking and Cheadle whipped in a delicious cross that was desperately swiped away by a blue boot as our boys queued up to connect, but then the pendulum swung in favour of our visitors.

A 63rd minute free kick awarded 20 yards from our goal was curled on target by Sow and Kozakis failed to keep it out at the far post.

Lewes manager Darren Freeman then put Jamie Brotherton on and the forward made a mark on the game just three minutes later - we didn't deal with a corner into our box and he stabbed the loose ball home from close range despite vehement protests by some of our players that he was offside.

So we were back to square one and had to roll up our sleeves - Kalvin Morath-Gibbs made a rare foray forward on 72 minutes and he burst into their box via a one-two with Sterling-Parker. Our defender was crowded out but he got a pass to the unmarked Bradford at the back post, but he rushed a shot woefully off target.

But we broke on 75 minutes as Cheadle won a tackle in our half and Bradford found the advanced Adeniyi. Our player/boss had Sterling-Parker on his left but he weighted a through ball down the middle which Miller burst onto. He was free of his marker and rifled a low shot from an even tighter angle which beat Winterton and rattled in off the far post.

We held firm as Lewes tried to turn the screw late on but, aside from efforts by Smith and Chappel that had Kozakis on his toes to cover, we took all three points to narrow the gap between the two clubs to three points.

Match report - Molesey (a)

Both sides missed good chances as we extended our unbeaten run to nine with a 0-0 draw against Molesey, writes James Barrett-Sterling.

Team news
Mohammed Idris-Oshilaja returned from injury and came back into the side for Peter Adeniyi in the only change from Saturday. Ex-Robin Ronald Sobowale was named among our hosts' subs.

Kick-off
There was an unusual occurrence with this game as it pitted two brothers against each other - goalkeeper Alex Kozakis' sibling Antony played number 10 for our hosts and, as Molesey enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges, they clashed on 20 minutes.

Josh Andrews, by far the liveliest of our opponents throughout, fed a through ball which Antony raced onto but our Kozakis got down well to ensure the angled drive went the right side of the far post.

Our forwards weren't enjoying too much joy at the other end as the Moles backline kept them quiet, although Antonio Simione played a soft back pass towards keeper Liam Allen at one point.

Raheem Sterling-Parker read the situation and bore down on the rolling ball, Allen seemed to clatter into him on the edge of the box but the referee didn't give us anything.

Both sides kept prodding and probing in the freezing conditions and the closest we came to breaking the deadlock came just before the break.

Sterling-Parker burst through on goal as the home side called for offside. Allen came out to narrow the angle but, although our striker still had the opportunity to shoot, he tried to unselfishly square for Mickel Miller whom was offside and the chance disappeared.

HALF-TIME: 0 - 0

We came out after the break in the ascendancy and were the more potent going forwards for a while.

We forged a great chance to open the scoring before the hour mark but, from six yards out, an unmarked Sterling-Parker stabbed a first-time effort off target.

Molesey responded by building down the left and Lodge, whom began the move and kept running into the box, burst onto a low cross in our box. He was one-on-one with Kozakis whom went to ground early but, instead of taking on what seemed to be a cert scoring opportunity, the midfielder went to ground looking for a penalty - it was a strange decision and the referee was having none of it.

Bobby Price and Paris Hamilton-Downes put shots from distance off target as we pushed forward again, but our last true opportunity came in the last 10 minutes.

We won a corner which was cleared but a second delivery was met but the unmarked Danny Dudley but he couldn't guide his header on target and the chance went.

Match highlights, interviews and photos coming soon.

November award

Massive congratulations to player/manager Peter Adeniyi whom scooped the Bostik South 'Manager Of The Month' award for November.

He's currently overseeing an unbeaten run that has stretched to eight games - six victories and two draws - and seen us jump up to third in the league and move into the second round of the Surrey Senior Cup.

Next up for Peter and the first-team is a Friday night trip to Molesey on 8th December (kick-off 3pm).

Tuesday 5 December 2017

Interview - Danny Dudley

We extended our current unbeaten run to eight games after taking four points from the first two of a tricky run-up to Christmas, writes James Barrett-Sterling.

After coming from behind to beat Walton Casuals 2-1 last Monday, we hosted fourth-placed Cray Wanderers on Saturday and again turned a half-time deficit round to this time draw 1-1.

That game had three of the Bostik South's top goalscorers on display, including Michael Power whom put Cray ahead from the spot in first-half added time, but our equaliser didn't come via a Mickel Miller or Raheem Sterling-Parker this time.

"It wasn't the prettiest but its about time I got one," smiled defender Danny Dudley whom headed us level with his first of the season on 51 minutes.

"It's great to keep the unbeaten run going and I felt we restricted Cray to only two real chances, both of which were penalties (the other was awarded at 0-0 but Alex Kozakis saved Power's low effort).

"We’ve worked hard on tightening up a few things recently and it’s obviously been paying off, plus the fans’ support has been immense recently. Everyone is buzzing”

That point not only kept us above Cray but also hot on the heels of league leaders Lewes whom visit Colston Avenue this coming Monday.

Ahead of that humdinger however is a tricky tie away to Molesey on Friday night and Dudley isn’t taking anything for granted.

“Molesey is never an easy place to go, they fight hard and the pitch isn’t always the best but we feel we can beat anyone at the moment,” he said.

“Lewes will also be tough but they dropped points on Saturday too which is encouraging. They’ve done superb so far this season but there’s still a long way to and we feel we can beat anyone at the moment.”

Molesey vs Carshalton Athletic is on Friday 8th December (kick-off 7.45pm).

Match report - Cray Wanderers (h)

It ended honours even as a first goal of the season by Danny Dudley meant we drew 1-1 with visiting Cray Wanderers, writes James Barrett-Sterling.

Team news
Paris Hamilton-Downes returned from injury to make his first start in over a month, while Peter Adeniyi came in for Omar Koroma whom went back to his parent club after the Walton Casuals victory.

Kick-off
We started brightly and a couple of early Jordan Cheadle free kicks caused panic inside the visitors' area, but we just couldn't capitalise.

But the first big talking point of the game came in the 21st minute - Aaron Rhule burst onto a ball into our box and, as our captain cut across to cover, the forward went down seemingly under the touch of Bobby Price.

It seemed harsh but, after 19-goal Michael Power put the ball on the spot, Alex Kozakis brilliantly sprung low to his right to palm the ball away.

We had a penalty shout of our own on 37 minutes as Raheem Sterling-Parker tried to make some room in their box and appeared to be bundled over, but the referee waved play on.

But there was another spot-kick awarded before the break and it frustratingly went to Cray on 44 minutes - Hamilton-Downes tugged at Brandon Scott's shirt as the winger tried to latch onto a through ball. It was Kozakis vs Power again but this time the striker converted from 12 yards.

HALF-TIME: 0 - 1

Thankfully we didn't have to wait too long after the break before we got back on level terms.

We forced a corner on 51 minutes which was only half-cleared to the edge where Cheadle fired in shot that was blocked. Hamilton-Downes just flicked the ball back up into the mix and Dudley stole in unmarked to head the ball across Nick Blue and in.

Cray responded quickly by winning a corner two minutes later but Kalvin Morath-Gibbs was on hand to knock a header on target off the line with Kozakis stranded.

We went up the other end and Ricky Korboa threaded a neat ball for Miller to chase. It tempted Blue to rush out and challenge our leading scorer on the edge of the area and the tackle was enough to force Miller out wide. He eventually dug out a deep cross that Adeniyi met with a side-volley but Blue had recovered to gather.

The pair swapped roles on 68 minutes as we defended a long throw into our box and Adeniyi strode out with the ball. He eventually swiped an audacious 60 yard pass into the run of Miller whom got beyond his marker and neatly took it into his stride, but Blue blocked away his angled effort.

Korboa won a free kick on 72 minutes that was on the near side about 20 yards out. Cheadle shaped to knock a delivery into the waiting pack but went for goal instead, forcing Blue into a full stretch save.

Neither side could force a further breakthrough so the point kept us above our visitors and in third place in the league.
