Match report - Worthing (h - FA Cup replay)

We were on the wrong end of a heavy scoreline as our FA Cup campaign came to an end on Monday evening, writes James Barrett.

Team news: Ricardo Panton came in for Paris Hamilton-Downes, whom failed a late fitness test, as the only change from the team which began against Worthing last Saturday.

A fine rain cascaded down as Worthing kicked-off and, from the start, both sides continued to play the kind of free-flowing football witnessed during the original tie at Woodside Road.

But, unlike last Saturday's game, we drew first blood this time; on nine minutes a clearance by Alex Kozakis was flicked on to Mickel Miller on the left. His eventual cross sailed over Tommy Bradford in the middle but the unmarked Brendan Murphy-McVey took the ball down before rifling it low back beyond Jack Fagan.

That goal, after the injustice of the added time penalty that robbed us of victory last time out, was saluted with gusto by the home fans and when Omar Bugiel, Worthing's hat-trick hero of the previous game, blazed high and wide from distance a minute later, a real sense of confidence swept around Colston Avenue.

The Worthing fans began encouraging their charges however and Kozakis had to deal with a Brannon O'Neill free kick at full stretch before getting a hand onto the corner delivery as we cleared the danger.

Bradford fancied his chances on a free kick 35 yards out shortly after but his shot, via a small nick off a defensive body, was comfortably gathered by Fagan.

Jarrell Gray was introduced for the injured Kalvin Morath-Gibbs on 20 minutes but we were bossing possession and doubled our lead four minutes later - Miller broke the visitors' backline on a long ball, skipped into the box from the left and teed up Ricky Korboa whom side-footed home from about three yards.

Worthing struggled to get a foothold as we continued to pass the ball around confidently and their defenders were having to put in some desperate challenges to stop our boys getting through time and again.

But, aside from Korboa ferociously testing Fagan from 20 yards on 36 minutes, we failed to create any further chances and Worthing took the wind out of our sails when Bugiel squeezed in a cross from the right on 44 minutes and Will Hendon beat Kozakis at the second time of asking.

HALF-TIME: 2 - 1

The first 10 minutes of the second-half were explosive to say the least - firstly, Jahmahl King was booked for giving away a free kick right on the edge of our area and O'Neill this time bent a low shot around the wall and in off the far post.

Then, within two minutes, we were trailing as Gray slipped with the ball on halfway, O'Neill galloped all the way into our box and Harvey Sparks neatly tucked away his pass from about 15 yards.

Before we could gather breath and compose ourselves we were down to 10 men as King was slightly late on Bugiel, whom was threatening to turn and run towards goal, and the referee had no real choice but to issue our man a second yellow card.

Murphy-Mcvey was sacrificed so Sean O'Toole could come on and plug the defensive gap but we looked dazed and confused for a while, until Peter Adeniyi went on one of his trademark runs and beat three players before finding Korboa out wide. He eventually teed up Miller but his shot was deflected off target by a defender.

That buoyed us and we tried to seek out an equaliser but Korboa himself had a shot blocked from 18 yards and Panton overhit a cross from a decent position on the right, and so Worthing slowly began to make their extra man advantage count.

Despite O'Toole doing well to halt two attacks as we entered the last 20 minutes, the visitors claimed a fourth goal as Bugiel won possession by the far touchline and he bore down on goal before drinking the ball past Kozakis from the narrow angle.

Sub Kingsley Aikhionbare displayed great strength to hold off two markers and turn with the ball deep in enemy territory on 75 minutes. As he entered the Worthing box, he spied Sekou Kaba free on the edge and gave him the ball but our midfielder was crowded out before he could get off a shot.

The visitors wanted a penalty on 78 minutes as it appeared Luke Brodie was caught by the recovering Richard Ismail inside the box but the linesman on the near side kept his flag down.

But that was academic as Worthing added two more late goals through Steve Metcalf and Bugiel to put a gloss on the result meaning, although our players kept going until the very last kick, our FA Cup dreams were emphatically ended for another year.
